The Financial Institution Group (FIG) is one of IFC’s key businesses responsible for a significant portion of IFC’s business volume, profitability, and development reach. FIG engages in a wide range of sub-sectors including Banking, Microfinance, SME, Gender, Climate, Insurance, Capital Markets, Housing, Distressed Assets, among other areas.
Private sector financial development is essential to the promotion of successful and sustainable economies in low and middle-income countries around the world. Sound and efficient financial markets can ensure that resources are allocated where they are most productive, assisting job creation and spurring economic growth. IFC’s goal is to prioritize investment in the financial sector because it promotes development in all other sectors.
IFC is looking to hire a Principal Investment Officer to join IFC’s FIG LAC & EUR team (CF6). The selected candidate will, in coordination with other members of Global Banking and Capital Markets team, and other investment staff, lead and support the origination, execution and supervision of equity and quasi-equity investments in the financial sector. This role requires strong and demonstrated technical skills and expertise in (i) structuring, negotiating and executing equity and mezzanine transactions, (ii) asset management, and (iii) leadership. The Principal Investment Officer will work in close collaboration with the regional teams to: (i) formulate IFC’s strategies for investing equity and mezzanine investments across FIG sectors in Europe and Latin America and the Caribbean; (ii) engage in business development; (iii) structure and execute transactions; (iv) manage assets from origination until exit; and (v) lead knowledge management on equity and quasi-equity investing and contribute to the development and dissemination of a strong equity investment culture across Europe and Latin America and the Caribbean.
Aufgaben
New Business
- Support business development efforts in line with IFC’s investment themes and strategies in the FIG space across geographies, to target and grow IFC’s equity and mezzanine business based on a consistent portfolio approach and the several financial sector trends observed in relevant countries and sub-sectors.
- Understand and analyze macro developments and industry level developments across markets and think through how they might offer opportunities (or present risks to be mitigated) for FIG to consider equity and quasi-equity investments.
- Develop and leverage extensive networks with industry players and other investors, and working closely with Regional Industry Managers and regional teams, make pitches as appropriate, in order to create a healthy flow of early equity and quasi-equity leads and then work with colleagues to refine them and identify an investable pipeline.
- For new equity and mezzanine investments, articulate: (i) investment thesis; (ii) investment structure and valuation; and (iii) equity management plan including exit strategy.
- Lead structuring and execution of investments, negotiation of legal agreements, and/or provide expertise and guidance to other team members, following high quality standards, structuring robust equity and mezzanine investments, and setting adequate risk adjusted return targets for such investments.
- Provide inputs to, and incorporate guidance from Regional Industry Managers, Regional Directors, Global Equity Head, Equity Risk Officers and other management members to develop and execute a profitable equity investment program.
Portfolio Management and Value Creation
- Take leadership and responsibility in managing high-value/complex equity and quasi-equity portfolio, including exit strategy formulation and exit execution, working closely with Regional Industry Managers, regional portfolio officers, and the Global Equity Head for FIG.
- Support value creation at investee companies.
- Devise and execute equity sales ensuring consistency with portfolio strategy.
- Provide expertise and guidance to regional teams in equity portfolio management, and proactively share knowledge and lessons learned across the different teams.
- Support Regional Industry Managers in ensuring that the right candidates are appointed as nominee directors on the boards of IFC investee companies and assess their performance.
- Support a comprehensive program for increasing the knowledge and learning of equity & mezzanine investments execution and asset management.
Profil / Ihre Qualifikation / Ihre Persönlichkeit:
- A Master's degree or equivalent professional qualification in finance or business and a minimum of 15 years investment experience.
- Minimum five years of active private equity / mezzanine investment experience at a private equity or debt fund set up, in-house private equity team of a reputable asset manager or private equity investment teams of sovereign wealth funds, etc.
- Proven track record in sourcing, leading, negotiating, executing, and exiting private equity and mezzanine investments in FIG.
- Strong network of contacts among reputable M&A firms, investment banks, financial institutions, private equity firms, and institutional investors, etc.
- Sound investment judgment, demonstrated ability to deliver high-quality work and results under time pressure.
- Ability to develop innovative solutions and challenge the status quo to build the business.
- Good team player, strategic thinker and thought leader.
- Strong written and verbal communications skills; fluency in English essential, Spanish, French and/or Portuguese a plus.
- Ability to collaborate closely with development finance institutions, banks, microfinance institutions, non-bank financial institutions, and other strategic, financial or institutional investors.
- Ability to develop and manage relationships with C-Suite professionals, board of directors, and shareholders of investee companies.
- Strong sense of service to clients and demonstrated business development aptitude.
- Good “deal sense” based on demonstrated strong analytical skills and sound business judgment specially in equity and convertible debt investments.
- Willingness and flexibility to travel and work across time zones.
